Pay attention to your dog’s breed and find out their natural tendencies. If you’re training a dog to go against its natural abilities, you may be putting too much stress and pressure on your pup by over-training when you don’t see the results you want. This can be psychologically damaging and cause severe anxiety. That being said, do not fall into the trap of being “Breedist” and only focusing on what the perception of each breed’s traits are. Yes, some breeds will have better retrieves than others, some breeds may not do so well with loose lead walking, but this doesn’t mean it will be true in every case. Learn what your dog likes and dislikes, what they are good at and what they shy away from, and then tailor your sessions accordingly.
