Jumping up is a common problem with dogs and puppies, at least as far as humans are concerned! To canines however, it is part of their normal meet and greet behaviour from an early age.
Thank you to Sharon for asking about jumping up. It is important not give any kind of "attention" whilst paws are where they shouldn't be! Attention can be touching, speaking or looking at a dog. Lure the dog off with a good treat, and praise and reward the dog when they have all 4 paws back on the floor.
A good cue word for this is "off". Remember to repeat the cue word when the dog is back on all 4 paws, and praise them by saying "good off". If you use the word down for lying down, you will confuse your dog if you use the same word for getting off things/people. An alternative method is to turn away from your dog as they go to jump up, and praise them when they have all 4 paws back on the floor.
Remember, if you stroke your dog when they have their front paws up on your body or leg, you are actually praising them for jumping up and therefore giving them the message that it's ok to do this!
Teach your dog to do a "sit" every time it approaches you or another person .... the "sit" then becomes your dog's way of saying "please give me a pat" and is much more acceptable behaviour than jumping up on everyone.
